Are Chocolate Based the Best Desserts?
Each time you eat chocolate you are taking in a bit of South American history. Chocolate was the creation of ancient South Americans. Chocolate was not just a primary ingredient in many south American meals and desserts, the ancient people of South America used bricks of chocolate as their currency. They did not use gold, silver, or rare rock for money, it was chocolate! Chocolate was used in many ritual drinks, foods, and desserts. This is why so many traditional Mexican desserts use chocolate. As we go over many types our of favorite Mexican desserts, you will see how chocolate is frequently used and where it came from.
Are Churros Always Cinnamon?
Churros was believed to have been introduced to South America when the Spanish came in 1500. The actual origins of this sugar and cinnamon covered dessert is not confirmed, but it many say is was a Chinese dessert. Once the Spanish brought this tasty dessert to South America, the natives put their own twist on the dessert and used chocolate and or fruit to sweeten the fried bread. Churros are one of the all-time favorite dessert that have come to be enjoyed in many different ways.
Mini Chocolate Chimichangas
When people think of a chimichanga they don’t typically think of a dessert. As many people well know, chimichangas are a crispy tortilla stuffed with a tasty, meat stuffing. However, if you take out the meat stuffing and instead stuff the crispy tortilla with melted chocolate tipped with ice cream you have a dessert everyone will go crazy for. Mini chocolate chimis are another highly requested dessert that everyone will save room for.
Fried Ice Cream
Fried ice cream is a very popular dessert found in many restaurants. It is often associated as a Mexican restaurant dessert. However, fried ice cream isn’t truly a traditional Mexican dessert. The origins are again hazy. It is believed to be a creation of a Japanese tempura restaurant. There are others that claim it was invented during the Chicago World Fair in 1893. Regardless as to the claims, many people cannot leave our restaurant without having fried ice cream.
Mexican Flan
Flan is another very old dessert that was brought to South America. It is speculated that flan was an invention of the Romans that topped this dessert with fruit. However, it was the Spanish who added the caramel. Of course flan is also topped with glorious chocolate, which is the South American contribution to this popular dessert.
