What Kind of Cheese is Used in Mexican Dishes?

There are many different types of cheeses used around the world. When you think about cheese, you likely think about some of the more basic types of cheese including cheddar or mozzarella. However, the cheeses that are used in Mexican food all have one thing in common; they are made from cows milk. Every now and then there will be cheese that is made from goats milk, but by and large, the cheeses you will find in Mexican food come from a cow. Here are some of the most popular types of cheeses used in Mexican food:
– Queso Fresco: This type of cheese translates to “fresh cheese.” This cheese is usually made from cows milk but it will occasionally be made from a mixture of cow milk and goat milk. The flavor that comes from this cheese is a mild one, it has a delicious salty and slightly sour taste. It is best used to garnish fresh grilled vegetables or as a topping in Mexican soups. It’s salty profile is always a welcomed addition Mexican food.
– Cotija: This type of cheese is typically hard and crumbly. If you are looking to soften it, it will get slightly softer when it is heated.it is used to make an extremely popular dish called elote. It is also used on the top of fajitas, enchiladas, and tacos.
– Queso Blanco: If you could mix cottage cheese and mozzarella cheese, you would come out with something similar to queso blanco. This is made from skim cows milk. Many prefer this cheese heated as it will still keep its shape but becomes incredibly soft. It is often the cheese of choice when stuffing Peppers or enchiladas.
– Queso Oaxaca: One of the best types of cheese for melting on top or inside of Mexican dishes is Queso Oaxaca. It is the Mexican equivalent of mozzarella cheese. There is a reason that this is the most common cheese used inside the very popular quesadilla.
