What is Margarita Mix Made Of?
Many people make the mistake of using the wrong ingredients when mixing a margarita and then decide that this cocktail is not for them. However, you may not have had a true margarita. Sometimes certain ingredients are substituted with a rather horrible ingredient. For example, some college students will attempt to save money and buy Jose Cuervo and freeze instead of using tequila. This is one of the common mistakes made when making a true margarita. A margarita is made of a quality tequila or mezcal. The tequila or mezcal is the primary base of the margarita. The second key ingredient to a classic margarita is to add fresh lime juice. A bit of triple sec, which is an orange liqueur, is also added which adds a sweet flavor to balance out the sweet and sour of a margarita. When making a margarita, it may be tempting to use readymade lime juice and not the juice from a fresh lime. However, the flavor will not be the same and you are not having a true margarita. For a true classic margarita, you will always use fresh ingredients and quality tequila or mezcal, fresh lime, and orange liqueur.
Is Tequila VS Mezcal Better?
There is a big debate whether a margarita should be made with tequila or mezcal. As the debate continues, both are still considered a margarita. Which one to use will come down to each person’s individual taste. Tequila is made from the agave cactus. Unaged tequila has a rather light flavor that some would describe as earthy. However, as tequila ages, a sweeter flavor develops. Depending on the other local produce, the bees that pollinate the agave can produce certain flavors such as vanilla, caramel, and honey. So older tequila will have a sweeter taste for those who may want a sweeter margarita. However, the older a tequila gets, the more expensive they will be. Mezcal is another great option for a margarita. For those who like a bolder and more flavorful spirit, Mezcal is still made from an agave cactus. Tequila is only made from the Weber Blue Agave. Mezcal is made from other agave species which is why it has a variety of flavors. The process of making mezcal is a bit different than tequila which is why there is a bit more flavor, but it is still an agave based alcohol. Regardless as to whether you use tequila or mezcal, you can still have a great margarita.
Do You Drink Margarita with Salt?
A classic margarita will have salt along the rim of the glass. However, salt is another individual choice. Some margaritas can be made very sweet and the salt helps to balance out the over powering sweetness. There are some people who like the sweetness of a margarita. You can often order a margarita with or without the salt. The choice will be up to you.
