There are many Mexican dishes that everyone needs to try. However, there are certainly the top favorite dishes that everyone enjoys. For those looking to extend their Mexican food palette Eddie’s Mexican Restaurant would like to share some of the most iconic Mexican Dishes. We will share what flavors to expect and how they are best eaten.
Tacos
Tacos are a staple when it comes to Mexican cuisine. Tacos come in many different forms. There is the soft or hard tacos, street taco, and rolled taco or also known as a taquito. Tacos are a tortilla that is filled with various types of meat. Most popular meats used for tacos are chicken, beef, and shrimp. However, tacos can use any meat as long as it is spiced properly. Tacos are also topped with lettuce, cheese and if desired, pico de gallo. Tacos are not overly spice unless you add salsa or a spicy sauce. Tacos are perfect for anybody and can be prepared in many ways.
Fajitas
For those who want to add a bit of spice to their food, fajitas are the perfect blending of spice, meat and veggies. One of the features of a fajita that puts it to the top is that it is hot and comes out sizzling. The Fajita is cooked and served on a skillet which brings you all of the flavor from the pan. Often fajitas are served with rice, beans, and tortillas. Like a taco, you can add additional toppings if desired. Fajitas are great with sour cream, guacamole, salsa, and pico de gallo.
Tamales
One of the oldest Mexican dishes that is still enjoyed today is the tamale. A tamale is a meat or vegetable filling wrapped around dough, all of which is then wrapped and cooked in a corn husk. Tamales were a meal that hunters could take with them. Today they are still enjoyed. They can be made with different fillings and dough. However, a traditional tamale dough is made from maza or a corn dough. The tamale is often served with beans and rice and can be topped with your desired sauce or salsa.
Enchiladas
An enchilada is a corn tortilla that is wrapped around meat and topped with cheese and an enchilada sauce. Enchilada may seem like a rather plain dish, but it is one that is dancing with flavor. Enchiladas can be filled with chicken, shrimp, crab, beef and pork. There are some restaurants that even serve a cheese filled enchilada. However, the burst of flavor comes from the enchilada sauce. If you have never tried an enchilada before, you are missing out.
Chimichangas
Another iconic Mexican dish is the Chimichanga. Chimichangas are a meat filled tortilla that has been fried. The crispy tortilla really sets chimichangas apart from other Mexican dishes. The flavoring of the meat is also important. A chimichanga is also topped with a sauce such as the baja sauce or a zesty relleno sauce. However, there are a lot of toppings you can use or you don’t have to use any topping at all. That’s the beauty of a chimichanga—you eat it how you want it.
