Traditional Mexican Herbs, Spices & Seasonings; Garlic, Onion, Oregano, Cumin, Chili Powder & More

With a distinct taste, traditional Mexican cuisine is made up of a few common ingredients. For the style of this food, the spicy flavor is born thanks to ingredients like onions, garlic, herbs, chili powders, spices, and a few other specific seasonings. A few of the more common ingredients found in Mexican dishes is what we at Eddie’s Mexican Restaurant would like to share today.

Garlic & Onions in Mexican Cooking

Among the most common flavors you will find in Mexican food is garlic. From fresh, in a jar, or powdered, garlic comes in many forms to create Mexican cuisine like salsa, Spanish rice, taco seasoning, and other dishes and sides that rely heavily on garlic since garlic is frequently used in many recipes. Onions are found in many Mexican recipes, commonly in tandem with garlic. It is usually used fresh, though you’ll find that onion powder has its place.

Mexican Herbs & Spices for Tacos, Fajitas & More

The main herbs used to spice up dishes are oregano and cumin which is often create a signature Mexican flavor. A result of Mexican is oregano, a rich, earthy flavor in dishes. Among other types of oregano differ from Mexican oregano as it has a little difference, Mediterranean varieties that are popular in Italian cuisine. Though it is not a true oregano as it grows as a shrub it has a more delicate flavor than the oregano you may be used to. Since it pairs well with tomato-based dishes, which lends to an interesting flavor to other recipes. Cumin has been around from the beginning of history. Its origin lies somewhere in the Mediterranean because it is grown easily all over the world, though it has expanded in popularity. With its toasty yet somewhat bitter taste, cumin gives Mexican dishes a certain flavor that cannot be replaced.

Ancho, Chipotle & Other Mexican Chili Powder Types

A standard chili powder consists of a blend of powdered chilies, dried, cumin and oregano. Sometimes included in the blend are other spices that are mixed with these the prime ingredients. For Mexican dishes but has other uses as well, chili powder is primarily used to season meats and vegetables. Ancho Chile powder is another delightful Mexican flavor. With rich dried fruit flavors, this Chili is almost sweet. Adding a unique spice to the rich, sweet drink, Ancho Chile powder is commonly found in Mexican hot chocolate. Gaining popularity outside of Mexico and frequently used Chipotle is another Chile powder. Ultimately, chipotle is a jalapeño that has been dried and smoked. As it has a distinctive flavor it goes perfectly with many sauces and salsas. It is the primary flavor in adobo and can be both a rub and a marinade.

Unique Mexican Flavor Seasonings

Epazote a rarely known spice. It is used to flavor beans since it can calm any intestinal discomfort beans may cause. Additionally, Epazote is also known as “Mexican tea.” Too much is also very pungent and is also poisonous in large quantities. Cocoa is used to add a very rich, warm flavor and is common in several dishes. Being a thick sauce that is often served over chicken, spices combined with small amounts of cocoa and peanut butter are used to create a mole.
