When you think of Mexican food, many people think of tacos. Tacos are a staple in Mexican dishes, especially street tacos. Street tacos are a favorite among many. You can fill the soft or fired shell tortilla with your favorite seasoned meat and toppings with fresh greens, pico de gallo, and your favorite taco sauce. However, have you ever considered the origins of tacos and how long they have been part of Mexican cuisine? Eddie’s Mexican Restaurant will share the origins of the delicious taco and how it has become a key part of modern Mexican cuisine.
Origin of Tacos
The origin of the taco is a bit hazy. However, an historian by the name of Mr. Pilcher, did a lot of digging on the topic and has some interesting facts to share with those who just have to know. The birthplace of tacos has been traced to a silver mine in Mexico, during the early 19th century. The supported information that tacos were first developed in a mining community is due to early writers who mentioned the first taco as being called “taco de minero,” which translates into miner’s tacos. Not only was the taco invented by a miner, but so was the rolled taco also known as the taquito. The Spanish translation of taquito is small taco. Much of traditional Mexican cuisine begins a long time ago during the age of the Aztec empire. However, tacos are not considered an ancient dish as is it fairly modern.
Taco Shop
Another element to the evolution of the taco is the taqueria or taco shop. Taco shops were set up by the poor class that migrated to Mexico City. Many taco shops brought the knowledge of the taco from the mines and began selling it to the people. It comes as no surprise that the new dish took off. Everyone loves tacos. They are diverse and easy to eat. In a short period of time taco shops made their way to America and it doesn’t surprise anyone that the taco took off here in popularity. There are many fast food chains that make and sell tacos. However, some of the best tacos come from those with a love of Mexican food and provide better and fresher ingredients.
Types of Tacos
There are many traditional taco shops and restaurants that provide a wide variety of tacos. You can find soft or fried street tacos, hard shell tacos, or rolled deep fried tacos. You can put an assortment of toppings to fit them to your liking. Tacos make a perfect lunch or dinner meal and is enjoyed by all.
