Because of the coronavirus, an estimated 75% of Americans are now living under stay-at-home orders. Throughout the Las Vegas Valley, restaurants have been allowed to remain open, provided the dining areas are closed. With fast food windows staying open, many of the sit-down restaurants we love are offering takeout orders. Where good food is known to be help for many of us, it is safe to say that people are glad their favorite restaurants are providing us with nourishment. The big question is, “is ordering takeout safe?” Today, we at Eddies Mexican Restaurant would like to answer that.
Is Takeout Food Safe During Coronavirus?
With people seeking answers to what is safe and what is not, many consider perceived risks, such as if the takeout is safe for the person ordering them, the people preparing the food, or even the delivery drivers where that is available. Where these concerns cannot have definitive answers, customers and restaurants can reduce the risk. Since the beginning of the outbreak, the CDC has been consistent about letting the public know that there is no evidence that the coronavirus can be transmitted through food. The CDC notes that is most likely to spread from person-to-person through respiratory droplets, such as coughing and sneezing. Being that the coronavirus was detectable on cardboard, plastics and other materials for many hours, and even days, after it was applied to the surfaces, many folks are concerned about disease transmission via inanimate objects. For peace of mind and as a safety precaution, you can remove the food from the bags/packaging/containers and put it on clean dishware and use your own utensils when you indulge in takeout from your favorite restaurants. To enhance the safety precautions, you can use gloves when removing and re-plating your food. You can throw away the materials or thoroughly clean and recycle them when you have finished. Before eating, after you have replaced the dishware, wash your hands for 20 seconds with soap and hot water immediately. Hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol will suffice if soap and hot water is not available. Where the packaging materials were placed, you should clean and disinfect all surfaces; be sure to avoid touching your face. Ultimately, ensuring surfaces are clean and disinfected along with proper hygiene protocols can give you the confidence that delicious food is safe for consumption on your end.
Restaurant Cleaning & Disinfection Protocols
As many have seen in grocery stores, employees have taken extra steps to reduce the spread of Covid-19, through excessive disinfecting and care along with social distancing, wearing safety gear, such as gloves and masks and other precautions. You can rest assured that restaurants are following the same guidelines to ensure your food, and their containers are safe. At Eddie’s Mexican Restaurant, we practice disinfection protocols, our team of cooks are wearing proper safety gear, and we keep your food as safe as possible.
