How Do You Make the Perfect Taco? Layer Tortilla with Cheese, Meat, Salsa & More

Tacos are one of the most iconic dish in Mexican cuisine. Tacos are often paired with many other dishes or one can enjoy them by themselves. This iconic dish, with its rich flavors, various fillings, and quick preparation, is a famed cornerstone of Mexican cuisine. Today, Eddie’s Mexican Restaurant would like to share the art of making tacos, revealing the key elements that transform simple ingredients into a delicious masterpiece.

History of Tacos

Before we focus on how to create the perfect taco, lets first look at the beginning of this simple but beloved Mexican dish. The origins of the taco are believed to date back to the ancient Mesoamerican civilization, where people would fill tortillas with small fish. Over centuries, this simple meal evolved to include a variety of different ingredients that has been adapted throughout the different regions. As a result, tacos have become one of the most versatile dishes we know and love today.

Tortilla is the Foundation of a Taco

At the heart of every taco is the tortilla. This flatbread, typically made from corn (maize) or wheat (harina), acts as the edible foundation of every taco. The type of tortilla you choose can drastically change the texture and flavor of your taco. Traditional Mexican tacos often use corn tortillas, but feel free to experiment and see which is you favorite tortilla for your tacos.

Taco Meat Protein

When it comes to taco fillings, the sky is the limit. However, your typical starting point is the protein. Traditional Mexican tacos use grilled beef (carne asada), slow-cooked pork (carnitas), chicken, or even seafood like shrimp or fish. For vegetarians, options such as grilled vegetables, beans, or cheese can serve as delicious protein sources. You can use just about any protein that is sounding good to you at that moment. You can change your protein and have a completely new or different type of taco.

Salsa and Garnishes

Once you’ve chosen your protein, it’s time to layer the flavor with other ingredients. Salsas, with their vibrant colors and varied heat levels, are an essential part of any taco. From the green tanginess of green salsa to the fiery punch of red salsa, these sauces are a key element in customizing your taco to suit your taste. Then there are the garnishes! Freshly chopped cilantro, a squeeze of lime, a sprinkle of queso fresco, or a spoonful of guacamole can add an extra dimension of taste and texture to your creation.

Art of Assembling Tacos

Now comes the truly artistic part which is assembling the taco. Start with a warm tortilla, layer your chosen protein, drizzle generously with your preferred salsa, and then sprinkle your selected garnishes. The trick is to strike a balance, ensuring each bite includes a bit of each element. Add your preferred topping of cheese, lettuce and or tomatoes. Now you can enjoy the fruits of you labor.
