Do & Don’ts of Dining Etiquette; Make a Reservation, Party Arriving at Different Times & More

When it comes to dining out, a little planning and patience can go a long way, especially if you are sharing a meal with a group. Whether you are getting together for celebration among loved ones, a business meeting, or catching up with a group of friends, there are some common mistakes you want to avoid in order to make the event a success. With this in mind, we at Eddie’s Mexican Restaurant would like to discuss a few of the mistakes to help you avoid them next time you dine at a restaurant with a group.

What Rules of Etiquette Will Your Dinner Party Have?

1) Not Making a Reservation. One of the things restaurant hosts secretly dislike are unexpected large parties. You allow the restaurant to prepare for the rush a big table can bring by making a reservation for a large group. If they’re having a busy night, this also ensures that you won’t be disappointed. Also, the size of your party changes significantly, keep the restaurant posted.
2) Arriving at Different Times. Having everybody show up on time makes things a lot less complicated for your server, though it can be hard to control the comings and goings of a big group. It also should improve the quality of the service you get. There are certainly a few dining etiquette rules no one follows any more, while this is one rule we think all restaurant-goers should follow.
3) Asking for Separate Checks at the End. Don’t ask for separate checks at the end of the meal, please. It will save your server from scrambling later, as its best to ask right away. if splitting the bill isn’t possible, it will also give you a chance to sort the payment out with friends. This is the best time to ask for separate checks, by the way.
4) Requests are Made One at Time. Even if your glass isn’t 100 percent empty, ask for one at the same time if your server is getting a second drink for someone in your party. This will help keep the server’s time more efficient and not annoy her with the constant running back and forth.
5) You Monopolize the Time of the Server. Though you should absolutely feel comfortable chatting with your server and asking for what you need, they do have a job to do. You are likely not their only table, and they need to provide time and service to others.
6) Losing Patience and Getting Cranky. It can be challenging to serve a large party. Take a deep breath before complaining if you can see your server is making an effort. You can skip the party and chill at home with one of these restaurant copycat recipes if you are having a low-patience day.
7) Overlooking the Bill. Often, for parties larger than six, many restaurants add an automatic gratuity, often 18%. Before settling the bill, be certain you double-check so you don’t pay twice. However, if your server went the extra mile, don’t be afraid to add a little extra.
8) Staying Excessively Long. Though you may not want the fun to end, you should be considerate of others, especially if it is busy and people are waiting to be seated. Bring the gang to your home or change venues to a local bar.
