Authentic VS Tex-Mex Taco; Corn or Flour Tortilla, Stewed, Fried, Grilled or Baked Meat Filling, Spice & Toppings

Tacos seem to be one of those foods that is loved by almost anybody. They are staple in many households and are even given a day of the week. While many of us eat tacos on the regular, there are many that confuse authentic tacos with Tex-mex tacos. There is quite a difference between the two. If you aren’t sure whether or not you are eating authentic tacos, Eddie’s Mexican Restaurant is here to talk about the difference between the two of them.

What Makes a Taco Authentic?

There are several characteristics that will be present when you are eating an authentic taco. Following are the main things that set them apart from the tacos you are more than likely used to eating.
– Tortilla: The tortillas used to make authentic tacos are made using corn rather than flour. They are also always soft. Many of the American or Tex-Mex tacos out there use flour tortillas and are often hard as well.
– Toppings: If you are used to putting lettuce, cheese, olives, tomato and other toppings on your tacos, you are surely not eating a Tex-Mex taco. On an authentic taco, they have toppings like chopped cilantro, onions and salsas of all varieties.
– Spice: While spicy food is often associated with Mexican food, authentic tacos are generally not spicy at all. However, if you choose a spicy salsa to top them off, you can have complete control on how much or how little spice you want. Tex-Mex tacos are also not really that spicy.
Meat: The meat is where there is a big difference between authentic tacos and Tex-Mex tacos. Authentic tacos usually use beef, pork or chicken that is stewed, fried or grilled. Before grilling the meat, it is usually put in a marinade that consists of cumin, oregano, paprika, lime, onions and chilies. When it is on the grill, it is only seasoned with salt and pepper. Tex-Mex tacos are usually done using meat that has been baked. Sometimes, oven-broiled steak is used, but it is almost always seasoned with a taco seasoning packet.
