Are the Toasted Cheese Tortilla (TCT) & Baja Chicken Pizza Served Toasty Hot the New Mexican Pizzas?

You will often see Mexican Pizzas on many menus in Mexican or Tex-Mex style restaurants. Obviously, pizza isn’t a traditional Mexican dish but comes from Italy. However the Mexican pizza is a popular adaptation of this Italian dish. As there are many people who may wonder where this adaptation comes from. Eddie’s Mexican Restaurant would like to share what some people say about the origins of the Mexican Pizza.

Who Invented the Mexican Pizza?

The actual origin of the Mexican pizza is a disputed subject. Some people claim that the Mexican pizza comes out of the Chihuahua region in Mexico, due to their regular mass production of flour tortillas. However, who made the Mexican pizza popular was the fast food chain, Taco Bell who introduced the Mexican pizza in 1988. Their take on a Mexican Pizza uses two crispy tortilla shells, that have a blend of ground beef and beans topped with cheese, salsa, tomatoes and onions. Whether or not Taco Bell or the provinces of Chihuahua Mexico actually invented the Mexican pizza, there are many adaptations of this dish found in many Mexican or Tex-Mex restaurants. Pizza in general come out of Italy, as stated. However American versions of pizza are far different than traditional Italian pizza, so why not have a Mexican twist on the dish?

Baja Chicken Pizza

There is another type of Mexican style pizza, and that is the Baja Pizza. Unlike the Mexican pizza, a Baja pizza is the white sauce pizza version of Mexican pizza. Baja pizza is most often made with chicken and not beef. Additionally, a pepper jack cheese is used to bring out the baja sauce’s flavor. A Mexican pizza is ground beef, a red sauce or salsa topped with cheese and tomatoes. A Baja pizza uses layers of crispy tortillas that has the perfect combination of baja sauce, cheese and chicken. Baja pizza isn’t as popular, as they are only made in a few restaurants. Nevertheless, they make a great addition to any menu. Mexican cuisine is often a blend of culture that has adapted food from many parts of the world and then makes it their own. Pizza is no different than any other story. Both Mexican pizza and the baja pizza brings some of the best, yet basic ingredients together to create a delicious dish that most people love. Even though you hear the word “Pizza” don’t assume that it is only an Italian dish. When you are craving Mexican cuisine but want to try something a little different, don’t miss the chance to try a Baja pizza.
