Where Did the Most Famous Mexican Desserts Originate? Flan, Churro & Fried Ice Cream?

When visiting your favorite Mexican restaurant, you will find a menu filled that is with wonderful dishes and desserts. You might come to notice that certain desserts will often appear on many Mexican restaurant menus. Even though some of these desserts are greatly loved, not all of them originated in South America or Mexico. Some of these desserts have traveled around the world and have many variations. Today, Eddie’s Mexican Restaurant would like to share some of our favorite Mexican desserts and their fascinating origins.

Who Invented the Flan

Flan is a dessert that has its origins beginning in Europe, particularly in Spain. The word “flan” comes from the old French word “flaon,” which means “cake” or “pastry.” For those who may not know, flan is a custard-like dessert that is made using eggs, milk, sugar, and vanilla and is often served with caramel sauce. Flan was introduced to Latin America by the Spanish colonizers during the colonial era. It became a popular dessert in many Latin American countries and has become a staple of their cuisine. As flan can be found throughout Europe, there are many variations of flan throughout the world, including cream caramel that is found in France and Portugal, caramel pudding is found in India, and leche flan is found in the Philippines. Each variation has its own unique flavor and texture. Even so, it is delicious in any form.

Who First Made Churros?

Churro is a type of fried dough pastry that is very popular in Spain and Portugal. The exact origin of churros is unclear, but it is believed that churros was introduced to Spain by the Portuguese. Another theory is that the Spanish shepherds who lived in the mountains created churros. Others suggest that churros were inspired by the Chinese youtiao, which is a long, deep-fried dough that is typically eaten for breakfast. It is believed that the Portuguese brought the recipe for youtiao to Spain and the Spanish adapted it into what we now know as churros. Churros are more traditionally eaten either as a breakfast or as a snack. It can be served with a hot chocolate sauce for dipping, and some variations are filled with cream, chocolate, or dulce de leche. Today, churros are enjoyed in many countries and cultures, and have even been adapted into many different and new forms, such as churro ice cream sandwiches and churro waffles.

Is Fried Ice Cream a Mexican Tradition?

The origins of fried ice cream are unclear as there are many different stories about how this dessert came to be. One popular theory is that it was invented in Asia, where this dessert is still found and is popular today. According to this story of fried ice cream, it was first made in China, where chefs would take small balls of ice cream and quickly deep-fry them in hot oil. The result was that the ice cream had a hot, crispy exterior with a cold and creamy center.
