There are many people that will choose the Mexican restaurant they eat at according to whether or not their chips and salsa are on point. Salsa is a big part of Mexican cuisine and something that nearly everyone loves to pair with their favorite Mexican food. In authentic Mexican cuisine, there is more than one kind of salsa that can be the perfect addition to your meal. Eddie’s Mexican Restaurant is here to talk about different types of salsas, and what makes them so delicious.
What is Salsa?
While most of us love eating salsa, there is a solid chance that most people don’t know what salsa sounds like. In the Spanish language, the word salsa simple means sauce. It is one of the most delicious sauces that you can eat. Most of us think about salsa as a dip rather than a sauce in the US. However, salsa can elevate many dishes when you use it as a condiment and a sauce rather than a dip. Here are some of the most common types of salsas that we can enjoy when we go to a Mexican restaurant:
– Pico de Gallo: The most popular fresh salsa out there is pico de gallo. This is a mixture of tomato, onion, peppers, cilantro, lime and salt. It makes a lovely topping for tacos and other Mexican dishes. There is very little liquid in this type of salsa which is primarily fresh vegetables to mesh together and create a great companion for many different dishes. In Mexico, there are several variations to pico de gallo using ingredients like mango, cucumber or watermelon. In the US, hardly do you ever see anything other than the traditional pico de gallo ingredients.
– Salsa Roja: Another popular salsa in the US is salsa roja. In Spanish, this means “red sauce.” This type of salsa can be created using raw ingredients as well as cooked or roasted ingredients. The ingredients are puréed and blended together to bring a delicious condiment or dip. This is the most common type of salsa used when people eat chips and salsa when they are first seated at a Mexican restaurant.
– Salsa Verde: While salsa roja means “red sauce,” salsa verde means “green sauce.” Rather than using red tomatoes in this type of salsa, tomatillos are used. This fruit is far more acidic than tomatoes are and have a sweet flavor as well. Some people make salsa verde using raw ingredients and others will prefer to cook or roast the tomatillos before making the salsa. Because of the acidity of this fruit, you don’t need to add any lime juice to the salsa like people often do when using tomatoes in their salsa.
