What are the Origins of Sangria, What is it Made Of & Why is This Alcoholic Beverage So Popular?

There are countless alcoholic beverages and some of the best are associated with Mexican cuisine. Tequila shots, a few margaritas, some incredible beers, and a whole lot more are just some of the examples. We at Eddie’s Mexican Restaurant would like to discuss one of the tastiest beverages, the delicious and sweet Sangria today.

What is Mexican Sangria Made Of?

Sangria is a combination of brandy, red wine, chopped fruit, and a sweetener, typically. Fruits usually include melon, apple, grape, peach, orange, and mango and the sweetener is often sugar, syrup, orange juice, or honey. Though other similar drinks are steeped and chilled for a few days, most sangria is steeped and chilled for just a few minutes.

Where Did Sangria Originate From?

Most prominently in Spain and Portugal, Sangria actually originates from Europe and it was brought to South America during colonization. As Europeans first drank spiced wine in the Middle Ages, what we know as Sangria today has evolved over a number of years. Most water was unpurified and therefore could contain harmful bacteria, however, alcohol was very safe to drink back then. These harmful germs were killed off by the alcohol in beer, wine and spirits. Naturally including people putting spices and fruits in their wine, this led to many people across Europe experimenting with alcoholic drinks.

Is Sangria Mexican or Spanish?

Officially, Sangria itself got its start in Spain. They planted many vineyards across country when the Romans controlled the area around 200 BCE. Spain was able to ship their abundance of wines around the world since vineyards were plentiful. They added spices and fruits to create wine punches as a way to create more types of wine. Being the Spanish translation to “bleeding,” as a way to symbolize the drink’s red color, these wine punches were named Sangria.

What is the Best; Red, White or Other Variety of Sangria

There are many variations of Sangria like any drink. Below are a few of the creative offsets inspired by Sangria.
1) Instead of red, some Sangria uses white wine. In Spanish, this is referred to as “Sangria Blanca.”
2) Non-alcoholic sangria exists for those who do not drink. Essence of lemon, cane sugar, carbonated water, and wine grapes are usually prepared as sangria.
3) Used with orange juice, lemonade, and sliced pear, mulled wine, or a drink consisting of red wine, mulling spices, and raisins provides a rich, full-bodied taste.
4) Being that is actually an archaic English name for Sangria, people in the West Indies produce a similar drink called “Sangaree.”

Fun Facts About Sangria

A couple of other fun facts about Sangria are listed below.
– In the eastern and southern parts of the country, it is a year-round beverage, though Sangria is only served in most of Spain and Portugal during the summer.
– It is immensely popular across many South American countries, including Mexico, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic, although Sangria originates from Europe.
