When Did Chocolates Become a Dessert?

You will notice that many Mexican style desserts will often use chocolate. You may think it is because everyone just loves and enjoys chocolate, which helps make these desserts more desirable. However, that is not the case. Chocolate is actually a South American creation. Chocolate originated in South America and Mexico which makes chocolate a traditional element to ancient cuisine. Chocolate was used as currency, ritual drinks and in many ancient South American and Mexican cooking. When you see chocolate in any Mexican style dessert, you know it is part of their rich history.

Are Churros a Dessert or Appetizer?

There is a lot on controversy when it comes to the origins and traditional method of making this dessert. Some churros are those long stick of star shaped dough dessert with a delightful, crispy exterior and doughy center covered in sugar or cinnamon. Others say a traditional churro is a soft dough that is fried and covered with sugar, cinnamon, and other toppings. You will get a churro in a variety of different ways. No matter the variety, churros are one of the most popular Mexican style desserts that everyone must try and then can be eaten as a snack anytime.

Mini Chocolate Filled Chimichangas

Chimis or a chimichanga isn’t what most people think when wanting a dessert. A chimichanga is a crispy stuffed tortilla with a meat base filling, which doesn’t shout dessert. However mini chimichanga or chimis can be filled with other fillings including fruits, chocolate, and other cream fillings. Often chimis are topped with melted chocolate, ice cream, or whipping cream. In dessert form, mini chimis can become one of your most favorite Mexican style desserts.

Mexican Fried Ice Cream

What is fried ice cream you say? As the name suggests, it is ice cream with a crispy fried outer layer. Fried ice cream in itself is a controversy. You have the icy cold ice cream with a hot fried outer layer. It is true that fried ice cream uses a crispy outer layer which can be a caramel and or a flakey crust that surrounds the ice cream and then is quickly fried. Fired ice cream is another all-time favorite that many people have come to enjoy and love.
