Tostada VS Taco; Crispy Corn or Soft Flour Shell, Meat, Vegetable & Cheese Fillings, Lettuce & Other Toppings & More

When eating Mexican cuisine often many people will compare tostadas to tacos. Both have flavorful meats and toppings along with a crispy shell. However, tostadas and tacos greatly vary in taste and design. To help separate tacos and tostadas, Eddie’s Mexican Restaurant will share some of the key differences between the two of them.

Taco VS Tostada Shell

Tostadas translate to “toasted” and as many well know, tostadas are made with a crispy flat tortilla that’s been toasted. Some tostadas use one or two layers of toasted tortillas, creating a sandwich like dish. Another element of a tostada is that they typically use a fried corn tortilla where tacos can be made from either flour or corn. Tacos can also be made crunchy with a fried tortilla or served soft. However, there are far more differences between tacos and tostadas than just the shell they use. Mostly, it is how they are cooked.

Tostadas Have Crispy Shells

To get that crunchy tortilla for a tostada, the tortillas are either fried or baked. The secret of bringing a great texture to a tostada is glazing them with a butter or oil. Often an avocado oil can be used to glaze over the tortilla if one is baking them. When frying, the entire tortilla is usually submerged into the oil of choice. Not only does frying or baking the tortilla make them crunchy, but the tortilla is also firm enough to make a tostada a finger food, depending on its size. Mini tostadas make great sides and finger foods and is often seen on sampler plates.

Tostado VS Taco Fillings & Toppings

After having the perfect shell for a tostada the next major difference is between taco filler and topping. Tacos traditionally use a meat filling with lettuce, tomato, cheese, and a sauce. The meat used for tacos can greatly vary from beef, pork, chicken, shrimp and fish. When making a tostada one major ingredient that is not used in tacos is beans. Re-fried beans is often used on tostadas, and like a taco, the tostada can use a variety of meat or even none at all. Tostadas can be made without meat and still taste great making it a great vegetarian dish. When creating the tostada another important feature is the toppings. A tostada will use lettuce or greens along with guacamole or even plain avocado slices. One can add pico de gallo and other fresh salsas to intensify the flavor. Tostadas can be made to fit any one’s preferred taste. The tostada is a great tasting and healthy Mexican dish that separates itself from tacos.
