Origins of Fried Ice Cream
When it comes to the history of fried ice cream, as well as its origins, it can be a bit hazy. Some claim this dessert as originating in the United States in places like Chicago or Philadelphia. However, most agree that it actually originated in Asia. Most claim fried ice cream is a Japanese dessert. As the actual origins of fried ice cream cannot be completely agreed upon, most will agree it is delicious and favored among the masses.
Ice Cream, Batter & Topping Components
Premium Ice Cream – You cannot have fried ice cream without the ice cream. When making fried ice cream it is important to get a large enough scoop of ice cream so that when it is fried, the ice will not melt too quickly. The ice cream is made into a ball shape to help the ice retain its icy temperature. In most cases, vanilla ice cream is used. However, it doesn’t always have to be. Some places may offer different flavors of fried ice cream. However the outside layer and toppings that are added often work best with vanilla ice creams.
Fried Batter Coating – Most fried ice creams use a breading or cake like coating that can be mixed with coconut shavings, but not always. The outer coating of the fried ice cream is meant to be crunchy and is deep fried. The entire scoop of ice cream is coated with the crumb mixture and is then put into a deep fryer but only briefly. The ice cream is only put in a deep fryer for a very short period of time, usually only long enough to make the coating a lovely golden brown. Once the coating is properly fried, it is time for the topping!
Honey, Whipped Cream, & Other Toppings – Due to the nature of ice cream you can have almost any variety of toppings. However, most fried ice creams are topped with either chocolate, caramel, or honey, and whipped cream. Some toppings may include fruit such as strawberries, cherries, or a combination. The topping adds a bit more flavor to the fried ice cream. However, most traditional fried ice cream will always use honey which enhances the flavor of the dessert.
