Fun Facts About Mexican Food; Nachos are Originally from Mexico, Geography Affects Cuisine & More

Many people around the world love indulging in Mexica Cuisine. With a combination of flavors, the mouthwatering tacos and tortilla wraps have blessed the world. Aside from the tasteful dishes many of us have come to live, there are some facts concerning Mexican food that you may surprise you. With this in mind, we at Eddies Mexican Restaurant would like to share a few fun facts about Mexican food.

Interesting Facts about Tacos & Other Mexican Food

1) Most Mexican Dishes are Nutritional. The locals’ diet consisted mostly of fruits and vegetables prior to the conquistador’s introduced meat to Mexico. Giving them a balanced diet of carbs and proteins, beans, maize, and insects are included in their diets.
2) Nachos and Caesar Salads Originated in Mexico. An Italian immigrant named Caesar Cardini invented the famous Caesar salad. Cardini opened up his namesake restaurant, Caesar’s after settling in Tijuana, Mexico. Cardini’s kitchen was left sparse of ingredients after a celebration of the 4th of July. The experimental bowl contained the same elements as the Caesar salad today as a result. Nachos were created in Mexico, like the Caesar salad. On a night in Piedras Negras, Ignacio Anaya Garcia, a.k.a. Nacho made history. With fried tortillas, cheese, and jalapeno peppers, Garcia concocted the ever-great nachos.
3) Chocolate & Tomatoes Started in Mexico. In Mesoamerican cuisine, Mexican dishes have their roots. For today’s Mexican cooking techniques and ingredients, the Aztecs and Mayans laid the foundations. Those who cooked with tomatoes was the Aztecs. Additionally, they were the ones to introduce chocolate to the world. Known to drink chocolate liquid with spices were the Aztecs. Making them the earliest version of the chocolate milkshake everyone knows today; they also chose to add vanilla and honey to sweeten their chocolate drinks.
4) Mexican Origins Belong to the Tacos. Back to the early ages of Mexico, tacos have been traced. Silver miners in Mexico ate tacos as a snack in the 1800s. Americans were only introduced to tacos in the late 1900s, despite Glen Bell, owner of Taco Bell, being cited as the taco shell inventor. They have dedicated the 31st of March as National Taco Day, which indicates the significance of tacos are to their culture and traditions.
5) Per Regions, Mexican Food Differs. Depending on where you are in Mexico food varies. While southern Mexicans opt for chicken and veggie dishes, where northern Mexicans are better known for their meat-based dishes for example.
6) Mexican Food is Considered a World Heritage. An integration of cultural, culinary styles and ingredients is Mexican cuisine. The beloved dishes of the 21st century have been shaped by the Mayans, Spanish, Aztecs, and French cuisines. It is no surprise why UNESCO listed Mexican cuisine as part of the honorable list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity with the mixtures of these culinary cultures.
