Different Types of Salsa; Pico De Gallo, Spicy Roja, Mild Verde, Taquera, Criolla Onion Relish & More

One thing that many people are looking for when searching for a new Mexican restaurant is good salsa. Without good salsa, many people aren’t interested in eating there. There are many different kinds of salsa, and if you haven’t tried them all, it’s never too late. Maybe you didn’t realize that there were different types of salsa to choose from? In that case, Eddie’s Mexican Restaurant is here to talk about all the different types of salsa out there so you can decide which one you want next time you go out to eat at a Mexican restaurant.

Pico De Gallo

This is one of the most delicious fresh salsas out there. Made with fresh tomatoes, onion, pepper, garlic, cilantro and lime juice, it is an uncooked salsa that is extremely popular in Mexican cuisine. It is often used to top tacos, burritos and other Mexican dishes. Many people even like to simply eat this salsa with their favorite tortilla chips. There is usually not much liquid with this salsa, and you can make it as spicy as you would like.

Is Salsa Roja Spicy?

Salsa roja is the most popular salsa used to pair with Mexican dishes in the United States. It is a spicy salsa that you will find at most Tex-Mex restaurants. It is named salsa roja for its bright red color that is good when topping tacos, burritos and even dipping your chips in it. Most of the salsa roja recipes out there will include tomatoes, peppers and onions among other spices.

Is Salsa Verde Mild?

Verde means green in Spanish, so you can likely guess the color of this salsa. This green salsa is made using tomatillos rather than tomatoes to give it that signature green color. The same ingredients used in red salsas are used in this salsa as well and it makes a great topping to many favored dishes.

Salsa Criolla Onion Relish

This salsa is unique because it doesn’t have a tomato base like many other salsas. To make this salsa you will use primarily onions. There are also peppers and cilantro that is usually used in this salsa as well. This salsa is usually used as a side dish.

Salsa Taquera for Tacos

The literal translation of the words salsa taquera is taco sauce. It is often found at many taco stands and makes an excellent dip as well. It is usually what is used to add spice to your tacos as it is known for being spicy.

What is Salsa Ranchera Used For?

If you are looking for a different spin on your salsa, try this salsa that has a rich roasted and smoky flavor that comes from roasting the tomatoes before you put them in the salsa. This is commonly the salsa of choice when making the famous dish huevos rancheros.
