When most of think of nachos, we think of a giant can of nacho cheese that is poured over a plate full of tortilla chips. When you are eating Mexican food though, there are several different kinds of cheese that are all uniquely delicious and don’t come from a can! Some of them you may be familiar with, but others aren’t normally found in your local supermarket. Eddie’s Mexican Restaurant is here to talk about some of the delicious cheeses that are featured in the Mexican culture and some of them that are found in our authentic Mexican dishes.
Queso Fresco Sauce
While the flavor is mild and somewhat similar to mozzarella cheese, the texture is completely different. This is a white, crumbly cheese that is found on many Mexican salad and bean dishes. The mild used to make this cheese comes from cow’s milk and sometimes a mixture of cow’s milk and goat’s milk. This mild cheese is one that is a frequent topping on many Mexican dishes.
Queso Panela
There is an Indian cheese called Paneer that is very similar to queso panela. It is also somewhat similar to cottage cheese. It is white and pressed cheese that has a similar appearance to cottage cheese. It is salty and a great topping for any Mexican salad. When you heat up this cheese, it will get softer, but will not melt like other cheeses.
Queso Manchego Melt
While some cheeses are served to accentuate the flavors in a dish, this cheese is often just eaten plain as a snack. It is an aged cow’s milk and has a slight yellow look to it. This cheese melts extremely well, and that’s why many people choose to put it on a quesadilla.
Queso Blanco Dip
This is another crumbly cheese that is a frequent topping on many Mexican dishes. This aged cheese is made from cow’s milk alone and can be eaten both hot and cold to accent your favorite Mexican cuisine.
Cheese Highlights Many Mexican Dishes
When most of us think about Mexican food, we immediately think about the wonderful cheeses that are used to make them taste so delicious. One of the cheeses that is often used to make Mexican dishes and isn’t actually a Mexican cheese is a jack blend. Cheese is used to melt on top of several dishes, in many different sauces and will bring out delicious flavors that wouldn’t be there otherwise.
