Two Biggest Breweries in Mexico
Unlike other parts of the world, in Mexico, there aren’t micro-breweries like you see in the U.S. and Europe. When it comes to Mexican beer, almost all of it comes from two big breweries; Grupo Modelo and Cuauhtemoc Moctezuma. Following are some of the beers offered from them.
Grupo Modelo Beer Types
Corona Extra: This is by far the most popular and highest sold Mexican beer in the U.S. It is a light lager pilsner beer that highlights a mild flavor that has a touch of that hop bitterness so many love. More than 4 billion liters of this beer is made and sold on an annual basis.
Corona Light: This beer has been around since the 80s and claims to deliver the same flavors as the original beer but with 30% less calories.
Negro Modelo: This dark beer is known as the “cream of the beers” in Mexico. It was originally only available on draft, but today you can buy it bottled nation-wide.
Modelo Especial: Among Mexican consumers, this is the fan favorite. With a fuller, richer flavor than Corona, this lager has been around since 1925.
Pacifico: Many people consider this a light, refreshing pilsner beer. In the northeastern region of Mexico, it is the leading beer sold.
Beer Types from Cuauhtemoc Moctezuma Brewery
Sol: A light, tasting lager beer, Sol is exported to Asia, Europe & South America today. This beer was originally brewed for the working class and studies show that young people identify with it.
Tecate: This medium lager is one originally brewed in Baja California. It is easily one of the most highly recognized beer brands in Mexico.
Amber Dos Equis (XX) & Dos Equis (XX): Today, Ambar Dos Equis (XX) beer is the highest selling non-domestic dark lager beer sold in the U.S. Dos Equis (XX) is light lager beer that is based on the original dark beer and is a popular choice in Mexico and the U.S.
