How is Cinco de Mayo Celebrated in the United States of America? Mexican Food, Culture & Traditions

May 5th will mark another year and time of celebration of the victory of the Franco Mexican War. In 1862 the Mexican army claimed victory over the French on that day and is now celebrated as Cinco de Mayo. Like most holidays, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated will friends, family and of course, great food! Eddie’s Mexican Restaurant would like to share a brief history of Cinco de Mayo and how we can help you celebrate this fun holiday.

Is Cinco de Mayo Mistaken for Mexico’s Independence Day?

Cinco de Mayo is often mistaken for Mexico’s Independence Day. However, that is not the case. Cinco de Mayo actually commemorates a single major battle in Mexico’s history. This battle was sparked when the Mexican government was in financial ruin due to years of internal conflicts. The Mexican government was forced into debt by the European government. France, Britain, and Spain demanded payment and sent their naval forces to collect it. Mexico was able to negotiate with the European government and they withdrew their forces. However, France, who was ruled by Napoleon the Third, thought it was a good opportunity to invade Mexico and extend the empire of France. The French invaded in 1861 and this is when the war began.

Who Won the Battle of Puebla?

The Battle of Puebla was the last stand for the Mexican army. Outnumbered 2000 to 6000, Mexico fought back mightily and eventually overtook the French against impossible odds. The Battle of Puebla was won on May 5th and to this day, this victory is celebrated. Cinco de Mayo is celebrated with military parades and a recreation of the Battle of Puebla. During this holiday each year, many families will gather together to remember this day in their country’s history.

Cinco de Mayo Food Traditions

Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in many different ways here in America. One common feature at any celebration is of course having good food. When celebrating Cinco de Mayo many people love going to their favorite Mexican restaurant. This year, all restaurant dining areas are closed to the public due to the COVID-19 virus. Nonetheless, many of your favorite restaurants are still taking orders. You can pick up or have your food delivered through the number of delivery services. However, perhaps this year during the Cinco de Mayo celebrations, restaurants could possibly be open to the public again. Only time will tell.
