Why Do People Often Confuse the History of the Burrito? Mexican VS Tex Mex Burritos

Who doesn’t love a good burrito? Have you ever given much thought as to how the burrito came to be? Many people I’m sure haven’t. This favorite Tex-Mex dish is chosen by thousands everyday as their breakfast, lunch or dinner. They are filled with all sorts of ingredients and sauces to create an explosion of flavor and goodness with every bite. Eddie’s Mexican Restaurant is here to talk about where the burrito came from and how it came to be such a staple in so many people’s diet.

What Does the Name Burrito Mean?

If you translate the word burrito in Spanish it is “little donkey.” The story of the burrito is an interesting one. Apparently, there was a man named Juan Mendez who commonly sold food from a cart pulled by a donkey. He would carefully wrap the food within the confines of a tortilla in an effort to keep the food warm. Many will say that this story is untrue and that it actually all started because the burrito looks like rolled donkey ears or the rolled packs that are carried by donkeys. So, the origination of the burrito’s name is somewhat unclear!

California Mission Style Burrito

Anyone who has spent much time in California will tell you that the Mexican food found there is amazing. This is actually where the first burritos in the United States come from. They came from a small café in Los Angeles named El Cholo Spanish Café. The most commonly enjoyed burritos today are known as Mission Style Burritos which are actually said to have come from San Francisco in the 1960s.

Other Cultures Beside Mexico Put Their Spin on the Burrito

Today, you will find that Mexican food isn’t the only way that you can enjoy the burrito. Other cultures are putting their own spin on the burrito. Some of these cultures include Asian cuisine like Thai, Korean and Chinese. People in Mexico don’t enjoy burritos near as much as we do in the states. Actually, if you want a burrito, you are more likely to find it in the Northern region of Mexico. You will also find that they are more like the tacos that we enjoy than burritos.

Tex-Mex Burrito Food

The way that we enjoy burritos is much different than Mexico and is considered to be a Tex-Mex classic. You will find a combination of meat, cheese, rice and beans in most burritos. However, you can also enjoy a great deal of condiments that will make them even better which include: sour cream and guacamole as well as red, green and white sauces.
