Can You Train Your Body to Build a Tolerance to Spicy Food? Start with Mild Sauces, Eat Hot Foods Often & More

People around the world enjoy spicy foods often, especially those that enjoy Mexican cuisine. While it might not be a big deal for some people to throw down food that is filled with spices and ingredients made to turn up the heat in your mouth, there are some people that struggle eating spicy food. If you are one of those people that wishes they had the tolerance to enjoy a spicy dish, don’t despair. Eddie’s Mexican Restaurant is here to share some tips that will help you build up a tolerance for spicy food.

Start with Mild Sauces

When you’re working to build up your tolerance for spicy food, it is important that you don’t just head for the spiciest foods right out of the gate. You will want to start with sauces that are the mild side rather than super hot side at first. You can end up ruining your meal if you start out too spicy. Once you feel completely comfortable with the milder sauces, you can bump it up a notch.

Eat Spicy Foods Often

You don’t want to go a year between your spicy meals. When you’re working to build up a tolerance for spicy dishes, you want to eat them regularly so you can work on it. If there is too much time passing between meals, you will have to start all over again. Remember, this takes time, but it will be worth it in the end.

Have the Right Drink on Hand

Another thing that will help you get used to spicier foods is to have the right drink on hand. If you are drinking, beer, soda or water, it will only move the capsaicin around your mouth and feed the fire. Milk is one of the most effective ways to combat food that is too spicy.

Pair Spicy Foods with Those that Are Cooler

When you’re eating spicy foods, try pairing it with something that is on the cooler side. Just because you are working at getting more tolerant of spicy food doesn’t mean that it is the only thing you can eat. For instance, some foods that work well with spicy food include, avocado, coconut milk, watermelon, sour cream and more. This can help the spicy food to not be too overwhelming.

Know Your Limits

Even though you might be in a space where you’re working to challenge yourself, don’t push yourself too hard. You have to understand that this is going to be a process and isn’t going to happen overnight. Don’t go too far, too quickly.
